I’ll be honest with you, though — Ann Morrison is a spring-only location for me. The rest of the year, the park’s resident geese make it a little less than ideal (if you know, you know). But in the spring, when everything is green and blooming? It’s absolutely magical. The tree-lined paths in particular give you this beautiful natural tunnel of light and color that photographs beautifully. Kathryn Albertson Park at 1001 S. Americana Blvd in Boise is one of those locations that I genuinely love — in the right season. In the summer, it transforms into something really special. There are large open areas filled with wildflowers that make the most incredible, colorful backdrops, and in June especially, the daisies are in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous. I love getting kids down in the flowers, sniffing daisies and just being kids — those are the moments that make the most authentic, joyful photos.

One thing I love about Albertson Park is that it’s flat and easy to walk around, which makes it great for younger children. There’s lots of variety to work with as we move through the park, and the natural beauty gives us plenty of options for different looks within a single session.

When to Avoid Kathryn Albertson Park

However, I want to be upfront with you about one thing: I actually steer families away from Kathryn Albertson Park in the fall. While it is beautiful during that time of year, it is also incredibly busy — especially on weekends. Friday through Sunday in the fall, the park is packed with families and photographers, and it’s just not the experience I want to give my clients. I don’t want to be waiting for a spot to open up or competing with the crowd. There are far better fall locations in Boise that will give you a more peaceful, personal experience — and I’m always happy to share those recommendations when we chat.

The Boise Greenbelt is one of those locations that I keep a little close to the vest — because the specific spot I use along the river is genuinely one of my best-kept secrets. What Makes This One of the Best Places for Pictures in Boise

The area I love along the Greenbelt offers incredible variety all in one location. There’s a beautiful little pond behind an office building with large decorative rocks that photographs beautifully. Cross over a bridge to the other side of the river, and you get a stunning view looking out over the Boise River, framed by large, towering trees. Turn the other direction, and there’s a winding dirt trail that moves through tree-lined areas with fallen logs and different vantage points that overlook the water. It’s a really fun, adventurous location that gives us four or five completely different looks without ever getting in the car.

This is my go-to fall location for a reason. The way the autumn light filters through the trees along the river is just breathtaking — and one year, during a family session out there, a doe and her fawn wandered into the scene. I stopped and turned my camera toward them, and we got this completely unexpected, magical moment. That’s what I love about this spot. You never quite know what you’re going to get — and that’s exactly the point. The Boise Depot at 2603 W Eastover Terrace, is one of those locations that just has it all — architecture, gardens, variety, and that timeless, classic feel that photographs beautifully in any style. It’s one of my favorite spring locations in Boise, especially when the lilac trees are blooming. There is something absolutely magical about photographing a family surrounded by lilacs in full bloom with that stunning limestone building in the background.

Best Features of This Boise Photo Spot

The gardens around the Depot offer so much variety in a relatively small space. I love the steps leading up toward the building, the area near the pond where a large lilac bush creates the most beautiful soft color in the background, and of course the limestone building itself paired with the brick surroundings — it’s just stunning. For families with little ones who are on the move, the flat surfaces are a real bonus. A running toddler is much less likely to take a tumble here than on uneven terrain, and the gardens give us lots of visual interest to work with at their level.

Photographing Inside the Historic Boise Depot

If your session falls on a Sunday or Monday — the days the Depot is open to the public — we also have the option to step inside the building, which is absolutely stunning. The soaring ceilings, massive windows, beautiful tile work on the floors and walls, and those long wooden benches with brass accents create an incredibly unique and dramatic interior that you simply won’t find anywhere else in Boise.

Best Time of Day for Depot Sessions

From a lighting standpoint, the Depot is best at golden hour — that hour to hour-and-a-half window before sunset. The building faces north, which gives us a beautiful open shady area to work in while the sun is still up, and then as it drops lower we can move out into the gardens for that gorgeous, soft golden light. Parking is generally not an issue at the Depot, which is always a nice bonus for families. This is truly one of the best places to take pictures in Boise, and it works beautifully for families of almost any age — it’s also a particular favorite for seniors and couples.

Studio Sessions at Tiffany Hix Photography — When Indoors Is the Perfect Choice

Not every session needs to happen outside — and honestly, for some families, the studio is the absolute best choice. My studio at 1524 S. Vista Ave. in Boise is a wide-open, light and airy space done in neutral whites and grays, designed to complement any home decor style. There are no big, colorful, trendy backdrops here — just clean, classic, timeless portraits that will look beautiful on your walls for decades to come.

What to Expect at the Studio

The studio features a white bed setup for lifestyle-style images, a couple of couches and settees, and a beautiful wall with coffered doors that gives a really elegant architectural feel. The entire room is usable during the session — I never limit kids to one spot, and they love that freedom. In fact, kids are almost always upset when it’s time to leave. I hear “when can we come back?” more often than you’d think, and parents tell me their kids talked about the session for days afterward. That kind of reaction tells me we’re doing something right.
